That's when you Respec to a Hammerdin, making them a caster, and they continue to steam roll the game. It wrecks everything through most of Nightmare, levels quickly since it kills everything on screen with AoE, but starts to fall off quickly in Act4 NM. An example is a Holy Fire Paladin, which you can use from Lvl 1. There's some decent runewords that will work.Īlso some builds are great early on for Normal/Nightmare to kill things quickly, but then you Respec later.

Melee characters are harder as you have to upgrade weapons more often, and repair them. The rest is basically self found, whatever looks good, gives + skills, faster cast rate, or resistance. You can find or make some better stuff if you don't need the FCR. Lore Helmet is also easy to get, but it's only a +1 Helmet, and not a huge priority if you don't feel like grinding it.įor Armor the Stealth Runeword will last you until endgame, and its really easy to make (two common runes). Gives +2 Skills, some FCR, and lots of Mana. The other Runeword casters use is a Spirit Sword, which is also easy to get. Makes a huge difference, and it's not that difficult to get the runes. It will give your Merc an Aura that quickly refills your mana, so you can spam much more often. But you can make or find some good stuff that will get you through it.įor most characters you're going to grind out Nightmare Couuntess to get the Runes to make an Insight. Melee classes are a little harder since they are reliant on a decent weapon to deal damage, and in NM/Hell the enemies defense increases so your chance to hit gets lower (so you need more Attack Rating on items). Just look up a good build for the character you like. Anything can work in Normal for the most part, but you need a decent skill to get you through the Nightmare and Hell. Some builds do really well, others are trash. A little later around lvl 30ish most classes will breeze through the rest of the game, especially casters. Just, know what you're getting into, and understand the differences. None of this is to say it's a bad game, or that you shouldn't play it.

If the endgame is something you enjoy about D3, give that a lot of consideration. There's no adventure mode, no bounties, no rifts or random dungeons, none of that. Once you finish the campaign, there's nothing else to do, except the campaign over again on a higher difficulty. Lastly, and this is probably the most significant and tangibly worse difference, there is no true endgame for D2. There's no convenient way to store and swap between builds, for example, and it's extremely costly and inconvenient to respec skill points.

You'll spend your time farming runes and things to socket into your armor that gives you +3 to your favorite skill, instead of farming the last piece of your favorite set and the specific gear for its meta.Įven with many of the QOL changes made to D2R, many of its systems are very dated, and those limitations will become apparent the more you play. You won't be zooping back and forth, making screenfulls of monsters explode in an instant in D2, it just isn't that kind of game.įinding a good blue or yellow item is a lot more impactful in D2 than D3, both because of the way stats are handled differently, and because legendaries and sets are a whole lot rarer in D2. Skills generally aren't as flashy, or overpowered, and those mobility skills and spells that are present aren't nearly as fast as D3. Those enemies that are there, though, will tend to be a bit tougher than their D3 counterparts, so combat feels more challenging in many cases, even with fewer enemies at a time.

Much more like what we've seen from the D4 beta, though toned down even further. It's a very different kind of game from D3, so whether you like it will largely depend on what, exactly, you liked about D3.Ĭombat is a lot slower with more deliberate pacing to encounters, with generally fewer enemies on-screen at a time.

Would be a shame for you to miss it, if you're a fan of these type of games. My only complaint about D2R is non-instanced loot which took a while to get used to for social play. Hit a wall at the end much quicker and was just playing to try and get on Grift leaderboards (got top 10 at one point with a crazy fast level + boss, but those kind of levels were incredibly rare). And with addition of terror zones, there's better endgame challenge and reward.ĭ3 otoh felt more like just rinse and repeat Grifts with no good loot upgrades or build changes during endgame. The itemization and build customization is deeper and more complex in D2R, to the point where I can continue finding/crafting/trading for upgrades for many years. And yet as soon as I tried D2R with updated graphics, I never looked back at D3 again. I didn't play original D2 back in the day due to graphics being so bad, but I played a ton of D3 (about 3000 hours), which I enjoyed a lot.
